Surfboard stories volume 8 • Wakefield RI Photographer
I realized that we haven't had a guy in a Surfboard Story since Chives in volume 2 but Drew is here to break that streak. Drew brought with him the only board he's ridden for the last many years and suggested the pose that you see below himself....I love how it turned out so he was onto something. He also mentioned that there would be waves on the fourth of July (because there are always waves on the fourth of July) and there were. Maybe only for two hours...but he was right (Drew, when will there be waves again....ahhhhhh!) Read on to check out Drew's photo and story.
What's your name? Drew Wheelan
Do you have a superhero name or any superpowers I should know about? JuneBug aka Deucebeetle or Dungbeetle; good at nailing while driving.
What board did you bring with you today? Custom 5' 10" Rich Pavel, it's based on a board that he shaped for my buddy Scott. Some people call it a speed dialer, but I think that's just a coincidence, but I don't read the magazines.
Why did you bring this board? I brought this board because it's the only board that I've surfed (more or less) for the last six years. This board and I have been in the longest committed relationship together of either of our lives.
Where did you get it? My buddy Scott was getting a couple of boards from Rich, and I piggy backed on the order to get the bulk/bro prices. I think I got lucky.
Do you remember the first wave you ever caught on this board? I remember the first session, shoulder high, hollow lefts at "the stump" in WA. I think I bailed on a closeout first wave, but I remember a few tubes. It was instant chemistry.
Do you remember your favorite wave ever (or favorite day ever) on this board? I remember a couple, one that illustrated its versatility was triple overhead cape "B" in WA, outrunning sections backside. It blew my mind and was scary, super scary.
Do you have a favorite place to ride it? Yes, but the wave doesn't really exist anymore. It was the "true" left across the Elwha River mouth, but they breached the dam, and the sediment killed the wave, at least so far.
Any final words? I have no contingency plan if something real bad were to happen to this board and it really scares me.
