There are lots of reasons you might book a studio photo session for headshots. As a Charlestown, RI headshot photographer, I’ve had clients in my studio for headshot sessions for all types of things: because they’ve never had a headshot done before, because they haven’t had one done in a long time, because they’re job hunting, because one is needed for a book cover, a modeling application…the list goes on and on.

When you schedule your studio headshots session, we’ll have a discussion on the reason for the session, and we’ll talk about what to wear, hair/makeup, and how I’ll guide you through posing. We will also talk about what backdrop would best suit your specific headshots. I have a number in the studio and there are are tried and true for headshots. WHITE

The white backdrop is one of my most frequently used backdrops. Using a white backdrop does not necessarily mean that you’ll get a pure white background…this is why it’s so versatile!

The white backdrop can be a range of tones, from pure white to light gray to dark gray to black, depending on light setup and how we position you.

It also means that you can have one of the most varied ranges of looks during your session. We can get three or four different looks using the same backdrop!

Younger subjects look great on a white backdrop that is shot to look true white or light gray. White or light backgrounds are a favorite of real estate agents.

This is a more dramatic example of what a white backdrop can look like. If you’re looking to add some drama and intrigue to your headshots, we can do that!

Different lighting techniques can be used to create anything from a more traditional to a super dramatic look. It all depends on what your goal is.

GRAY

Gray is my most popular headshot backdrop; about 75% of my clients choose this neutral. It looks good with all skin tones and looks great when you wear a pop of color. It is a medium gray, but like white, can be made to be lighter or darker depending on your needs. Another cool fact about the gray backdrop is that they can be made to be just about any other color using a colored flash that affects just the backdrop. Feeling fancy and want something red, or purple, or teal? That can happen! Most clients who choose gray want just gray, but the option is there for something different if you like.

TAN

This color is technically gray according to the manufacturer, but it’s really more of a grayish-tan (or tannish-gray?) color. It’s a neutral that’s a little bit different from a true gray. I like it so much that I used it for my own photos (yes, that’s me up there…yes, I took my own headshot!) Neutral colors like this help make you stand out and be the focus of your images, which is exactly the point.

BLUE

This blue backdrop is my personal favorite. It’s a gorgeous shade of blue! It’s professional and powerful and there are a huge range of clothing colors it works well with, including blues, grays, yellows, reds, and oranges. It’s not for everyone, but all the images that are created with this backdrop are truly stunning!
