Three Ways To Finish Out April Vacation • RI Family Photographer
For many of you, this week is April vacation week. Some of you may be on vacation in far off (and possibly warmer!!) climes with your kids, while others are staying home and enjoying a break from the daily grind. Either way, it's fun to relax a little.
That said, if you're staying closer to home, you may be looking for things to do with your kids. There are still a few days of vacation left, the weather hasn't been spectacular, and some of you (or all of you!) may be getting cabin fever. Fortunately, the weather looks like it's improving. And never fear, I've got some suggestions for things to do whether it's sunny out or the rain continues. These things were my favorites back when I was a kid, long before I became a RI family photographer, and I still enjoy them now. Ready for some suggestions to change up your view? 1. Go to Boston.
Boston is one of those places that you either go to a lot, or you forget that it's so close. Easily accessible by public transportation, it's full of things to do for kids and adults of all ages. There are museums of all kinds, from art to science to the Children's Museum and more. The New England aquarium houses all kinds of sea life, there is good food to be found everywhere, and there is so much history. You can have lots of adventures that are low or no cost; the Freedom Trail is a wonderful walking historical tour throughout the city. Or wander around Beacon Hill or the North End with the kids and find little hole-in-the wall bookstores, yummy Italian bakeries, and street art and sculptures.
2. Take a hike.
There are so many great places to hike in South County and all over RI! There's Rome Point in North Kingstown where there are still seals to be seen; a great reward after a hike to the water. Whale Rock Trail in Narragansett is a fairly easy hike through fields, woods and to the water. The South Kingstown Land Trust has a number of properties where families can hike. Check out their website for trail maps and info. One of my very favorite local hikes is at the Trustom Pond national wildlife refuge on Matunuck Schoolhouse Rd. The area offers variety for hikes and is beautiful during all seasons.
3. Visit one of RI's own museums.
One of the lesser-known gems of RI is the Providence Children's Museum in (you guessed it) Providence. It's often overlooked for the larger and more well-known Boston Children's Museum to the north, but RI's own museum can provide hours of fun for the younger set. Have some art buffs on your hands? The RISD Museum, also in Providence, has art of all kinds. When I was a kid, my favorite area was the Egyptian room! Bonus: this museum has free admission on Thursday evenings and all day Sunday.
